Nambé Pueblo

A wonderful experience to see Native American dances. We also hiked up a trail to see the falls from the top of mountains. Ate a delicious Indian taco. Every day is filled with learning about these descendants of the first Americans. 

Pablita Velarde Museum of Indian Women in the Arts

Learned that  Pablita Velarde, was the first Native woman to paint full time as a career in this country. She was from the Santa Clara Pueblo. 

The museum features her daughter, Helen Hardin. So much beautiful and meaningful art work.

The weather has been awesome but in mountainous areas you can always count on a variety of weather in any one day. Today was warm, blue skies, sunshine, every different kind and color of clouds until late afternoon when it rained super hard for about 10 minutes and then the rainbow appeared. It just made my day.

More Abiquiu

Abiquiu, NM

Met the author, Napoleón Garcia, a Genizaro storyteller. A Genizaro claims ancestry of both the Native American tribes of the area and Colonial Spanish settlers. It was an unexpected and wonderful time. He shared important information about his people and when he worked with artist Georgia O'Keefe.

Bandelier National Monument

Trekked along trails of Pueblo Indians in Frijoles Canyon. They made their homes on Mesa tops. Climbed up a couple of ladders to access rooms to what used to be their homes. Learned a bout a kiva. Got a sense of their great commitment to community.
